Mewgenics (originally titled Mew-Genics) was first introduced to the gaming world in 2012.

It was described as a rather unique cat-themed game that aimed to blend elements typically found in life simulation games like The Sims and creature-focused titles such as Pokémon. It also promised touches reminiscent of the relaxed pace of Animal Crossing, alongside hints of the virtual pet care found in games like Tamagotchi. Initially planned as the highly anticipated follow-up project from Team Meat, the creators of the much-loved Super Meat Boy, development unfortunately encountered difficulties, and the game was shelved a few years later with little public announcement.

A considerable amount has transpired in the years since then. After the original Team Meat co-developers, Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes, pursued separate paths, McMillen went on to achieve significant independent success with the highly popular roguelike game The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. He also developed other critically acclaimed and distinctively quirky titles, including The End is Nigh and the Binding of Isaac spin-off, The Legend of Bum-bo. However, in 2018, McMillen delivered a surprising announcement: he had decided to restart development on Mewgenics from the beginning, and updates have suggested that progress on the project has been steady ever since, much to the renewed anticipation of its dedicated fanbase.

McMillen provided a brief update on the game’s development progress on Steam, explaining that “Mewgenics” is currently undergoing optimizations and will be showcased in more detail next month. Regarding the release date? McMillen mentioned that more information would be available next month as well. Meanwhile, players can add it to their wishlist on PC.
