In this update, the Start Menu will transition from its current multi-column format to a single-column, scrollable interface. This means that all pinned icons and installed apps will be visible on one page, eliminating the need for users to click the “All Apps” button to view their applications.

Before this update, Windows 11’s Start menu would show recently opened applications, edited documents, or items from OneDrive. With this new setting, users can now turn off “Recommendations,” so the Start menu will only display pinned and installed applications.

Microsoft’s built-in algorithms within the Start Menu automatically handle the categorization of installed applications.

This system intelligently sorts apps into predefined groups such as “Tools,” “Productivity,” “Games,” and “Social.”

The primary aim of this automated sorting is to streamline the user experience, facilitating the quick and efficient location of the specific apps users require within the interface.

However, it’s currently a notable limitation that users cannot customize or personally manage these automatically generated categories to better suit individual workflows or preferences.

Looking forward, a revamped Start Menu is anticipated to be rolled out later this year, potentially introducing changes to how application categories are managed or presented.
